Here’s to clanking quality vs quantity flutes of bubbly Franciacorta vs goblets of cheap whatnot with @ego.circus’s kickoff event to a 4 month event program promoting sensible imbibing at one of my favorite rooftop bars Empireo at Hotel Lucchesi @toflorencehotels. And while it may be way too cold for a dip and today a rainy Friday in Firenze- I would sensibly sip a well-made glass and snack on this bright blue lit rooftop any day (no rain just shine). Come in for the sparkly decor, stay for the wafts of melted butter redolent of warm flakey pastry both savory and sweet, all the chocolate cakes and dainty fruit tarts. Umamiwhirl weekend started with an Alba truffle dinner organized by @langheroero held @pastapopupsf in North Beach SF. If I can find time in my current torture chamber of deadlines/commitments, I’ll slice up a 📝detailing why Alba white truffles are special, and if you are thinking of chocolate pls get off Instagram and onto google pronto, why so expensive and also a heartfelt plea to stop pairing truffles with palate confusing Barolo or other commanding tannic dry reds. Taking a short-lived break from la cucina Italiana to the ever so pretty cucina persiana- and full advantage of the mega plethora of Persian food choices in LA (SF/Bay Area what’s wrong with you) and thanking my lucky stars for having been born into my idea of the best kind of privilege- i.e. into arguably 2 of the tastiest/historic cuisines in the world 🇮🇹🌹🇮🇷 Lovely feast @toranj_restaurant_la: buttery heart fluttering saffron and zingy barberry rice, succulent sumac snowed in kebab, dilly fava pilaf and oily roasted eggplant spread with minty fried shallot and strained whey goodness. Amarena syrupy cherry and prized pistachio not from Bronte but from Stigliano, a tiny green/mountainous village nestled in “le dolomiti Lucane” in the Matera province in Southern Italy’s Basilicata- so basically mountain grown pistachios. Unlike Sicily’s volcanic grown Bronte pistachios which stretches centuries, the history of Stigliano’s pistachio production is a stone’s throw from the 90’s after a local farmer travels to Greece and with the consult of a respected agronomist in Athens decides to bring back pistachio plantings to cultivate in this gem of terroir. So while it might seem a bit cold for gelato in Florence, I suggest to keep devouring cones- you never know what little food for thought you’ll digest!
