Though travel has slowed down making it definitely a quieter summer in Florence, I am happy to see some of our favorite tasting stops still alive and kicking where we snack on truffle smeared panini and wash them down with crisp Italian bubbles.

Italian coffee culture in Florence (and elsewhere) typically bars (pun alert) remote working at coffee shops. Maybe Rome and Milan are a bit of an exception? (pre-covid/BC of course!)

In staying true to the term “espresso” the consumption is supposed to either be a fast and furious caffeine infusion or a moment to slow down with a human (not a PC) in front of you. The irony is this was taken @caffetteriapiansagioberti but when in Italy, better to remote work at home with a cup.

A little late to the game here but happy belated birthday to our Duomo ringing in a snug 600 years.

I was reading on @theflorentine that a couple years ago @museofirenze had formed a commission for planning festivities for this milestone birthday, but alas 2020 had other plans for our Cupola’s big 600. In any case, if you’re in Florence this August plan a visit to the entire gang (duomo plus cathedral, museum, baptistery and Giotto’s bell tower) and wish this work of magic another sturdy several hundred. In Italian summers, gelato is an essential part of our daily diets due to the crazy heat, but of course in 2020, we have been hit with even more crazy reasons to adopt a gelato diet.

🍦Some fun 2020 gelato facts for you:
- The first weekend post-lockdown, Romans consumed 240,000 kg of gelato
- Even with that, with the lack of mass tourism this year, Gelato consumption in italy is down 20%

😅While I would love to help out all our beloved gelaterie and send you some, I don't think it would last long in the Post.

Although for unsavory reasons, this year’s Italian national holiday Ferragosto (Assumption Day) will be bittersweetly opportune in terms of what restaurant options will be open. Book ahead! Happy to see Cibreo & Vini e Vecchi Sapori on the list! And may I add if you are in Florence to take advantage of Vini e Vecchi Sapori’s outdoor seating smack dab in Piazza della Signoria.

Do you know how coffee got its name? “Coffee” derives from Kaffa (via qahwah in Arabic also meaning wine) and was a region in Ethiopia where coffee originated. Now this precious commodity is cultivated in several countries belted around the equator!

Legend says a goatherd in Kaffa noticed his goats became overzealous after eating these then unknown berries. Out of curiosity, he toasted the berries and transformed into the juice we need today to survive Mondays.

If you love gelato, there’s a woman you can thank for this sweet icy creation and that’s Caterina de’ Medici and her court who put on a cooking competition which yielded our preferred food group.

My absolute go-to combination is hohomero aka anguria 🍉 sorbetto contrasted by rich, salty Bronte pistachio, ideally scooped from Perchè No or a handful of spots (My Sugar in San Lorenzo, Ara è Sicilia in Sant’Ambrogio or La Sorbettiera in Tasso)
